France Presidential Election 2017 Livewire

Le Monde projections suggest Marine Le Pen gained some 10.6 million votes — a record for her party. Despite the nature of the second-round runoff that encourages tactical voting, Le Pen’s vote exceeded even the 7.6 million votes Front National achieved in the 2015 regional vote.

She also doubled the previous best vote achieved by her father, 5.5 million in 2002 when standing against Jaques Chirac for the presidency.

As it happens this may be the FN’s last election, as senior figures including Le Pen have said a time of profound and rapid change lies ahead. Look out for much talk of the Patriotic Alliance, or something similarly broad in definition in the coming weeks and months.

There is other good news for Le Pen — research by OpinionWay suggests her strongest demographic is with the young, and broadly speaking the younger the voter, the more likely they were to vote Front National.

In this round, some 44 per cent of 18-24 year old voters went for Le Pen, and were the least likely to spoil their vote — a blow for that outdated notion that young voters are the most liberal and forward thinking.
